The Niehart Residence is a rare and intact example of Mid-Century Modern hillside architecture which became synonymous with postwar Los Angeles. More specifically, it is a product of the “USC School,” which was concerned with site-specific design and open, flexible post + beam construction. By the time the residence was built, architect Richard Dorman had been featured in Arts and Architecture Magazine, received an AIA Award of Merit, and had been profiled by seminal architecture critic and historian Esther McCoy. The Niehart Residence is a T-shaped glass pavilion that responds uniquely to its hillside site in a way that evokes Case Study House #22 by Pierre Koenig. The great room for living and dining features exposed post + beam construction and fixed-panel floor-to-ceiling windows facing the expansive canyon, Century City, ocean and sunset views. The great room is divided by a floating fireplace supported by steel columns and glass sliders provide access to a balcony with views. Includes: four bedrooms, four baths, powder room, laundry room, multiple decks and sunny yard. Detached two-car carport with storage. The residence has been recently expanded and updated, and it is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark #1040.
