Featured in Barbara Lamprecht’s “NEUTRA - Complete Works” (Taschen), Richard Neutra’s Hendershot House, a historical modernist masterpiece, was commissioned by Robert Hendershot and his wife, artist Harumi Taniguchi, in 1962, and remained owned and occupied by them until acquisition by the current owner after Taniguchi’s death in 2017. In 1994, Neutra’s apprentice and trusted collaborator, John Blanton, designed a two-story addition to include a studio and gallery for Taniguchi. Thanks to an extensive two-year restoration by Eve Steele, in collaboration with fellow architect Pierre de Angelis, after accessing archival drawings, specifications and correspondence held by UCLA, the Hendershot House has been preserved and sensitively adapted, within the pre-existing footprint, and consistent with Neutra’s aesthetic and detailing, for a contemporary lifestyle, including a repurposed carport, now a modern kitchen, repurposed third bedroom and bath, and fourth bedroom and bath. As a result, the house now contains multiple indoor and outdoor living rooms and dining areas, on multiple levels, four bedrooms, including a main bedroom with sitting area, four bathrooms, and multiple outside patios and decks. Improvements include new foundation walls, new plumbing and electrical (plus generator), new bar, central vacuum system, remote access security alarm system with intercom and cameras, renovated two-car garage with newly insulated ceilings and walls and 220 amp sub panel ready for electric car charger. Behind a front wall, at street level, there is a zen-like front courtyard with specimen mature oak tree and water feature, and a three-story house, with elevations displaying the horizontal lines that characterize Neutra's later work, and other features thematic of Neutra’s work in the 1930s, including De Stijl architectural style interlocking with nature and hillside, descending through lush landscaping to a tranquil wooded area and running stream, and with Taniguchi’s artist studio repurposed as a garden-level entertainment room including additional kitchen, opening to an expansive added deck extending over the stream below. Wonderful for living, working at home, if desired, and entertaining. Available furnished or unfurnished.
