East Los Angeles

Located immediately east of Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles is world-famous for its cultural contributions, from zoot suits and lowrider cars to colorful street murals. A spiritual and literal homeland for the Mexican diaspora in the U.S., the city has the largest Latino population of any neighborhood in LA County. Its Maravilla Handball Court—the oldest in the region—was built by residents in 1928 and continues to serve as an important space for youth and families in the community. Notable architecture includes the Spanish Colonial Revival Our Lady of Solitude and the former Golden Gate Theater, built in a Spanish Baroque Revival Churrigueresque-style (now a CVS drugstore). Expect to find homes in the Ranch and Spanish traditions with easy access to freeways, Downtown, Cal State LA, and the Citadel Outlets. Fun fact: Whittier Boulevard, the historic main drag, boasts Mid-Century architecture and is still a hot cruising locale for auto-centric Angelenos.
