PRICE PER SQUARE FOOT: $640

SETTING: Rancho Mirage is a resort city in the Coachella Valley, a stretch of desert about two hours inland from Los Angeles. The region has long been a destination for tourists and weekenders, with many country clubs and a collection of midcentury modern architecture. This house is on the third fairway of the Tamarisk Country Club, on a lot once owned by Groucho Marx.

INDOORS: The single-story stucco house was completed in 1963. It was designed by William F. Cody, an architect who worked on houses, hotels and clubs throughout the Coachella Valley; Cody’s blueprints convey with the sale. Designed around a T-shaped pool, it has 11-foot high ceilings and walls of glass in several rooms, and views of the golf course and the San Jacinto Mountains.

The living and dining area is about 775 square feet, with parallel walls of windows and sliding glass doors. The room has a fireplace set into a white brick wall. Floors here are wool carpet, while the rest of the house has floors of a mix of terrazzo and ceramic tile.

The current owner strove to keep the house in period wherever possible, replacing the kitchen’s old speckled Formica countertops with newer Formica to go along with updated but appropriately simple-looking steel appliances. Each bedroom, including two suites, opens to the outdoors or the pool. The guesthouse has one bedroom and one bathroom, and also opens to the pool.

OUTDOOR SPACE: The property is nearly a half-acre, walled, with courtyards, a lawn and a four-car garage. The pool was recently resurfaced.
