The Art & Design of Downtown’s Broad Art Museum

Photography by Justin Juarez and Karen Knecht

Situated in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, The Broad museum has become one of the city’s most iconic architectural marvels. World-renowned architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed the building with a “veil-and-vault” concept in mind. The vault houses pieces from the collection not on display in the galleries. The top surface of the vault serves as the floor of the third-floor gallery while its carved underside shapes the lobby downstairs. Acting as the building’s exterior structure, the veil encases the vault with its porous and honeycomb-like design and allows filtered sunlight to illuminate the third-floor gallery. Housed within the structure are works by some of the world’s greatest contemporary artists. Some highlights include Jeff Koons’ playful yet monstrous steel sculptures, Takashi Murakami’s largescale chaotic paintings, and Barbara Kruger’s powerful photographic silkscreens.
