Exquisitely elevated and balanced above its site, the Steel House by architect Neil A. Johnson AIA has come back on the market after a comprehensive, multi-year renovation overseen by the noted architectural conservator/house whisperer Mark Haddawy for the home’s current owner, James Valentine, the musician, songwriter and lead guitar for Maroon 5.
Built in 1960 and profoundly influenced by the contemporaneous Case Study houses, a long gated driveway leads to a carport and parking at the rear, allowing the main living spaces to cantilever over the street front, open to the views of a distant downtown. Instead of the period’s expected wood post-and-beam construction, Johnson deployed welded steel to create a visually delicate and seemingly effortless structure.
