Open House Obsession: 1969 Post+Beam By Surf Legend Matt Kivlin, $3.5M

By Philip Ferrato

Where: 2000 Westridge Road, Brentwood
When: Sunday, June 19 from 2:00pm–5:00
Asking: $3,495,000
What: A 4-bed, 4-bath Post+Beam designed by architect/developer Matt Kivlin, cantilevered over a canyon with views over Brentwood to Downtown.

After experiencing the joys of surfing on a visit to Hawaii in 1940, Kivlin (1929-2014) would become renowned for engineering and developing the lightweight balsa surfboard (what would become known as the “Malibu Board”) before going on to become an architect, designing and building over 200 homes in Malibu, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica. By then he was a surfing legend, renowned for his board-building innovations and surfing style, and this may well have been one of Kivlin’s first projects.
