After experiencing the joys of surfing on a visit to Hawaii in 1940, Kivlin (1929-2014) would become renowned for engineering and developing the lightweight balsa surfboard (what would become known as the “Malibu Board”) before going on to become an architect, designing and building over 200 homes in Malibu, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica. By then he was a surfing legend, renowned for his board-building innovations and surfing style, and this may well have been one of Kivlin’s first projects.
