Herbert Hoover Jr., the Son of a U.S. President, Lived in This California Estate in the 1930s and ’40s

This hacienda-style estate was owned in the 1930s and ’40s by Herbert Hoover Jr., the eldest son of the 31st U.S. president. “President and Mrs. Hoover came and visited many times and it was known as the Winter White House,” said listing agent Katherine Orth, of Deasy PennerPodley. “There were many parties there with dignitaries.” The one-story house was built in 1928 by local businessman Frank Picard, and the estate included almost 6 acres of land.

In 1932, when the Hoovers moved in, they added a children’s wing with a playroom that was designed by family friend A.A. Milne, the author of “Winnie the Pooh,” Ms. Orth said. “The home really is a treasure of Sierra Madre,” she said. “It’s one of our most significant properties in terms of who lived there.” It has been “maintained very well as far as the architectural integrity of the house,” Ms. Orth said. “It hasn’t been modernized.” The owner, who has been there since 1994, did remodel the kitchen and it was “done in line with the style of the house,” she said. The owner also uncovered the original open-beamed wood ceiling in the living room, which had been covered over with drywall.
